Phone scammers claiming to be from CERT NZ

We’ve learned that scammers are calling homes across New Zealand, claiming to work for CERT NZ.

The scammers will tell you that you have a problem with your computer’s antivirus. They’ll ask you to log on to your computer and follow some steps that they’ll describe over the phone. Following the steps as requested could give the scammers access to your computer, putting your personal and financial details at risk of theft.

What to do

Prevention

  • CERT NZ won’t generally contact you out of the blue. If we do, you can verify that the call is legitimate by asking for the caller’s name, then ringing us back on 0800 CERTNZ to check.
  • If you’re suspicious about a call, hang up immediately. If someone asks you to log on to your computer and either follow some steps that they describe to you, or give them remote access to your computer, hang up.
  • If you think that you’ve been targeted by this scam, submit a report on our website, or contact us on 0800 CERTNZ.
