New malware found on routers

New malware called VPNFilter is targeting routers used in small or home offices.

In New Zealand, these routers are not commonly given out by your internet service provider. They are more commonly found in homes or businesses where routers have been purchased from third parties.

What's happening

Systems affected

Check if your router is affected by checking the model number on the device and seeing if it’s on the list of affected devices. The model number is usually on the front, underside or back of the device.

The affected devices do not appear to be commonly provided in New Zealand.

As far as we know, no other vendors and models are affected.

What to do

Mitigation

If your router model is in the list, then you may be affected.

If your router was provided by your ISP, contact your ISP for assistance with removing the malware.

If your router was purchased elsewhere, review our technical advice. You may need to contact IT support to work through this advice.
